“How long did you serve in the military Bennette?” she asked bluntly.
He cleared his throat, feeling uncomfortable at the turn in the conversation.
“I’m sorry,” she said immediately. “I can see this is a subject that…”
“No, no. Don’t apologize. It’s just that all of the images rush back into my head. They can be a little hard for me to handle sometimes. I served in the Gulf War. You know I was also in Somalia and Bosnia.”
“And you were a sniper.”
“Yes. I was really good at it, too. Isn’t that sad?”
She shook her head as he continued.
“The one thing I was extremely good at was killing someone. I’ve felt guilty for the part I played. It would take more than a priest to help me with it. I don’t really like to talk about it.”
“I understand. We don’t have to.”
“It’s just one of those parts of my life that I’d rather forget, you know? I enlisted to get away from my old man. Didn’t realize what the price would be; higher than what I expected, that’s for sure.”
