After several hours on the road, they pulled into the parking garage of the hospital. After finding the right floor, they made their way to the ICU nurse’s station and checked in. Hand in hand, Robin and Matt walked into Olivia’s room. There were tubes going in and out of her body and the IV’s hooked to her veins made Robin cringe.
Matt dropped Robin’s hand, walked further into the room, and sat down on the side of the bed. Even though he had been an emergency room doctor before becoming chief of medicine, nothing prepared him for his daughter’s condition. He touched her arm where the bruises from the heroin needles glared up at him.
“Look at this, Robin,” he said in a gentle voice, brushing the bruises with his fingers.
“I saw them,” she nodded.
“Did she want to die?” he asked in a voice that sounded broken, tears falling from his eyes.
“I’m sure she felt like it sometimes,” she answered in a soft voice.
